James WatersVice President
James Waters is a Vice President in Compass Advisers’ New York office. He joined the firm in August 2014 after receiving his MBA from Harvard Business School, where he was a Baker Scholar.
Prior to Compass, James spent 10 years in the government. He served as a White House staffer from 2001-2005, working as the aide to Office of Management and Budget Director Mitchell E. Daniels, Jr. and as a Deputy Director of Scheduling, managing political vetting operations across the White House and the 2004 presidential campaign. Feeling the urge to serve in the war on terror, James left the White House and entered active duty with the United States Navy in 2006. He qualified as a Navy SEAL officer (BUD/S Class 264) and served as a Platoon Commander until he left active duty in 2012, completing three overseas deployments.
James completed his General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSEs) at St. Paul’s School in England and is a graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire. He graduated cum laude from Harvard College in 2001, where he was the President of Phoenix S.K. Club and a member of the 4-time Eastern Champion Varsity Swim Team.
